"Ice Passage" Skaha Lake KayakLog:02 20 2014

Portions of Skaha Lake are clear enough for kayaking today. Some portions of the lake have thin sheets and some of ice from 2 to 3 inches thick.

There are little passage ways through the large sheets of ice, some large enough to paddle through.

I have provided a YouTube video below for your enjoyment.

Beautiful afternoon for a paddle after about 2 and a half weeks of a frozen over lake.

Layer of Ice on Skaha Lake and a beautiful blue sky made for some awesome lighting for photos and video today.

Not A Day For Kayaking - Chute Lake KayakLog:11/30/2013

Chute Lake above Naramata BC is rather frozen today with Winter conditions during our visit there. Managed to get some shots in and out of the heavy fog that managed to lift partially so we had a pinch of blue sky peaking through, made for some nice photo effects, then drop again. We could hear the people skating on the frozen lake in the fog. We could see them occasionally break through the thick heavy fog, didn't manage to get any photos of the skaters but did try.

KAYAKING - "To Banburrygreen" Skaha Lake February23rd2013

 

Had a great day paddling on Skaha Lake today. We paddled to Banburrygreen Campground and back to the N/E corner of the lake. Lots of sun today and yes.. the mosquitoes are out already.. must be spring only 23 days till "Official" Spring date but today was a great start even though it started to hail.

"Thin Ice" Kayaking Skaha Lake LOG:Feb10/2013

Sunshine in February. Kayaking Skaha Lake, there was a thin layer of ice on the North end of the lake this morning. Some of which we were able to paddle through.

Calm foggy morning. Light rain last night and temps at +3c this morning almost all the snow/ice in Penticton has melted. This morning was quite calm and +4c at the lake.

First February Kayaking - Skaha Lake Feb1st2012

Snapshots of the paddle

Well here are, the first of February 2013. Not much for snow and not much in the way of ice on Skaha Lake. Winter is almost over and we didn't get the deep freeze like we did last year. Starting February off with sunshine was awesome!




Paddling today with one of my old time paddle buddy's, Robin Dunham. We enjoyed a paddle in the sunshine along the East shoreline of Skaha Lake.

The sunshine was a welcomed sight as the clouds broke up a bit. Calm up the mountain while snowshoeing even though down in the valley was windy by the lake (Skaha) +3c. Here are some shots from our trek in the woods.

"Kayaking Winter Winds" - SNOW DAY Skaha Lake Log:Jan6th2013

With a 35kmh headwind from the South with gusts at least 40kmh. I attempted to paddle along the East shoreline towards Okanagan Falls (South from my area) but couldn't get past the point (approx 1.5km away), after numerous attempts I finally packed it in for the day and managed to at least get some paddle video and photos and a heck of a workout. The Tsunami glided well, the rudder made a huge difference while heading into the windy waves.

"Snow to Blue-sky Sunset" Snowshoeing Carmi Road December 29th 2012

When we get new snow sometimes it's just nice to break from kayaking and play in the snow. We drove up Carmi Road in Penticton today and explored some trails via Snow-Shoes. Started off hiking while it snowed then about half way through our hike the blue sky began to break through and managed to get some awesome shots. Part of the video will show Kathy McA gracefully sliding down a hill and taking me out at the bottom. Here are some of the photos, video will be posted at the bottom of this page, ready to watch soon.

We started our hike at START: N49 27.815 W119 27.965 (The starting point is actually on Beverdell Road)

Fall is here, sadly though..

Our lawn is green as can be and the sun continues to shine here in the South Okanagan Valley with the odd part day of smoke from near by forest fires in Peachland and Okanagan Falls. Sad to say but there are some leaves falling off our trees here in Penticton, BC Canada. We have had an extended Summer or Indian Summer (or more politically correct term "Native American Fall Warming Period") this year. Longer than normal sunshine and temps above 20c and hitting near 30c during the day but nights are getting cooler. For the past 4 weeks there has been mostly sunshine.. almost constant sunshine, even though some leafy trees are changing and beginning to fall. My kayaking is starting to dwindle down but will still be paddling on and off all Fall & Winter. 

 Almost time to think of blowing out the irrigation and empting our water fountain then plan some short Fall/Winter kayaking day trips.

 

Looking forward already for spring to come again LOL

Skaha Sunshine KAYAKING FEB27-2012

Beautiful day kayaking today. Winter sunshine was awesome, had the pleasure of kayaking with Kathy McA today. The temp was about -3c but the feel of the sunshine on my face was great! The wind was calm all afternoon while we were paddling. Passed by another Outrigger Canoeist near the N/W section of the lake, Kathy managed to get a short video clip of the paddler. Lastnight was cold I think it hit -10c so there was ice to the end of our dock. We needed to drag our kayaks to the end of the dock in order to get in our boats.

"Sick-It-Up-Buttercup" it's Winter!

"Kayaks hung on the wall with care.. with hopes that winter would never be there..."
Well we finally may have some winter I think Matt ( http://www.shuswapkayaks.com/ ) LOL
Well had a snowfall all yesterday evening and night. Shovelled the driveways at work at 5am. Finished work at 7am came home with hopes to sleep and shovelled the driveway at home so I could park my car. Now with back pain, cold fingers, running nose and now that I am wide awake might as well relax blog some pics. We had only about 2 to 3" of wet heavy snow this morning. Out where Matt lives he must have about 5 feet by now. The wind here is about 6kmh and the temp is -7.8c according to my little weatherstation by the lake. The lake is only partially frozen near the shore and the snow is still coming down as I type. The mountain across the lake can barely be seen right now. The gray looking water at the horisen almost blends into the bottom of the mountain and as I look up it disapears rightaway into a cloud of snow/fog.
(hmm doesn't appear my spell checker is working.. may be some typo's, sorry)

Winter Paddling Skills

Because of the greater danger that cold weather and water present, winter kayaking requires refined and reliable skills. A few that I consider essential are a perfectly reliable self-rescue. Because the paddle float rescue takes time, which exposes you further to strength-sapping cold water, a reliable roll is a must. In cold water, the shock from immersion can cause a gasp-like reflex, ice cream headaches and disorientation. The cold-water shock makes rolling much more difficult than in warm water. To help ready yourself for a time when you might need a winter roll, practice rolling in the cold. You should also have good bracing and other basic kayaking skills. If you rank your paddling skills, you should have expert-level skills before even considering heading out.

In addition to skills, always kayak with someone else during the winter. There’s too much that can go wrong and very little room for error.

MyGearBasics List (Kayak Camping)

Gear Basics

Some basic gear that I use while kayak camping and day trips. Not including the normal kayak safety equipment ie: lifejacket, bailing device, whistle and rope.

This is my Basics list that I build from as the trip requires.

• GPS (Garmin eTrex Venture CX)
• Cellphone (Blackberry Torch)
• Camp stove
• Hunting knife, folding saw  & hatchet
• Drinking water
• Shelter (Bivi-Sack, folding camp cot & sleeping bag)
• Firestarter (magnesium)
• Waterproof stuff sacks (for sleeping bag, clothing, food & gear)
• Waterproof boxes (I use transparent top boxes so my solar devices can charge while I paddle)
• Cooler ( I use frozen drinking water as freezer-packs rather than those blue freezer-packs. Think dual purpose)
• Easy food (like hot-dogs, kraft dinner, bannock can be cooked on a stove as well as a open campfire)

I try to think about multipurpose items ie: I wear a leather hat that also doubles as a bailing device. I also like to keep a Leatherman multipurpose tool with my gear. I freeze my drinking water and use it as a cold pack in my cooler and as it thaws I have cold water when I need it.

This is only my basics list and only to help trigger your mind on what you might like to bring on your kayaking trips.
