Indian Rock to Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park KAYAKING July27th2013

OKANAGAN MOUNTAIN PROVINCIAL PARK

  Great place to get "one with nature" ;). We paddled from Indian Rock (north of Naramata,BC) to the Okanagan Mountain Provincial park and found our favorite little secluded beach to relax for a day in the sun. As we were about 100' away from this little beach a bass pontoon boat tried to beat us to the shore but couldn't get between our kayaks. Must have been their favorite spot too. The party of disappointed riders in the pontoon boat eventually turned and headed North to find another beach as we pulled our kayaks on shore. This Provincial Park has many little secluded beaches along the Southern shoreline that are great for camping for 1 or 2 persons. There are larger camp spots along the way North to Rattlesnake Island, like Goodes Creek, Commando Bay, Burtrum Bay, Gerry's Cove etc. Most of these beaches are quite popular camping areas and some are quite the party areas for power boaters.


Many of these little pocket beaches can easily be missed by power boats. A kayak or small boat can easily maneuver around the rocks below the surface of the water to shore.

Be aware that some of this shoreline does have some Poison Ivy patches so be respectful of it and keep a safe distance from it and all will be well. Also cactus can be found along these beaches.

Our Rattlesnake Island Kayak Camping (TripLog August2012)

After much video editing and sorting here is our post of our trip to Rattlesnake Island

Great weather on the 4&5th of August temps were near 38c almost all weekend. Monday the 6th we were met with high winds as we paddled back the last 0.4 miles. Kathy McA and I were met with Kayakers Rick and Nikki who paddled from Indian Rock to the boundry of Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park. They paddled back with us thru an unbelievable wind and waves. Skaha Lake SUNSET

Warm day today 31c sunshine all day here in Penticton.

Here is our long range forecast for Penticton. Warm (some would say hot) weather here. Today the Lake Temp was 24c (Skaha Lake) and with more great weather still to come it should rise even more for August. Looking forward to August Long Weekend Kayak trip to Rattlesnake Island 

Kayaking: May Long Weekend Indian Rock to Rattlesnake Island 2012

Kayaking trip to Rattlesnake Island, started off with a head wind from the North and continued all weekend.  We managed to make it as far as Buchan Bay and enjoyed the sunset then in the morning the wind picked up again, but to cross Squally Point with a strong head wind wasn't wise so we aborted the plan to continue and turned back after the night at Buchan Bay. Nevertheless it was an enjoyable trip by all. Lots of great photos and video clips to squeeze into this video but was unable to get them all in. Check my LIVE BLOG post for more.

We all got wet from the cold water from the waves. Kathy gets Splash Over recorded in Time Laps,  LOL

May Long Weekend Kayak trip to Rattlesnake Island from Indian Rock 2012 - KAYAKokanagan UpComing EVENTS & TRIPS

Leaving on the Friday the18th of May and returning on the Monday 21st of May.

The plan is to paddle after Kathy McA & I are work for the day on Friday.

1st night: Camp at Commando Bay ( N49 42.199 W119 41.783 ) (Friday)

2nd night: Camp on Rattlesnake Island  N49 44.879 W119 43.022  (Saturday),

3rd night: Goods Creek ( N49 41.890 W119 41.189 ) on the 3rd night (Sunday).

 

We are bringing our fishing gear on the trip and if anyone wants to join us please feel free to bring your paddle craft and meet us at Indian Rock ( N49 39.207 W119 37.742 )

This is an open invite for you paddling friends out there. BYO kayak, food, gear. If you can't make the entire trip and would like to meet us along the trip you can do that too. We will have our GMRS two way radios with us if you would like to find our exact location where you can meet us. We will be using Channel 3 Code 16.

All welcome. Over-nighter paddle along the East side of Okanagan Lake.

About 4 to 5 hours each way.

Kayaking: Rattlesnake Island April 23-24 2011

Robin and I left the Marina on Okanagan Lake Penticton on schedule at 8am. Calm waters most all the way to Lake Breeze Winery area. Robin's kayak was taking on water through the skeg control rope. so he had to bail his kayak quite often. Rather than continuing to Indian Rock as planned Robin phoned for a ride back to town. I continued on my journey. Just after Naramata the south wind picked up bringing with it white caps and sewlls up to 2'. I continued on further away from the rock cliffs since the turbulence was quite bad near the cliff edges. 

Squally Point was the turbulence was not so good water splashing over the edge of the kayak. I continued to RSI with no where to stop for a break. My arms were beginning to cramp due to lack of water. No safe spot to stop to grab a drink. "Grin and bare it". As soon as I got past Squally, it was like there was a light switch. The water was suddenly calm. The rest of the paddle to the Island was quite pleasurable. I arrived at the Island at about 4pm. Dried out my gear with the sunshine. What a beautiful day for a paddle! The wind was whistling on the mainland on Okanagan Lake Provincial Park across the lake.

Weather radio forecasts -4c for the night. The wind on the South end of the lake was quite unbearable and didn't show signs of letting up any time soon so after investigating the other side of the island I relocated my camp to the North shore.While at camp I was in the calm though I couls hear the trees whistling at the top of the mountain from the south wind blowing over. After supper headed to the sack just after dusk.

Sunday morning 5:45am wide awake and ready to go! The wind had calmed and was just a lite breeze from the West , so I decided to get paddling before the wind picks up.Squally point was calm on the return trip. I pressed on till I got to Indian Rock where I stopped for a quick snak and more water.

Stopped for lunch or guess you could say brunch, at Three Mile Beach, one hour away from Penticton (normal paddle time). The paddling to Three Mile was calm. After lunch I hit a strong head wind from the South, The gusts left me paddling in one place a couple times. Finally arived at Penticton Marina at just before 3pm.

 

Hope you liked the shots. I had to use the old Fiji camera, Blackberry still non-functional at this time.
